Sky Sports poised to snatch Open rights from BBC for £10m a year

• BBC paid annual £7m in five-year deal until 2016

• Sky is committed to showing PGA Tour events until 2022

An announcement that Sky Sports has bought the exclusive rights to broadcast the Open, ending the BBC’s 60-year relationship with the oldest of the majors, is expected next week.

Sky will pay more than £10m a year under a contract that will be confirmed by the R&A, the Daily Mail reported. The BBC pays £7m a year under a deal, signed in 2010, to broadcast the tournament up to and including the 2016 Championship at Royal Troon and the R&A has spoken of its “special relationship” with the corporation.
